A Brief History of the ICC Champions Trophy

The ICC Champions Trophy, previously known as the ICC Knockout Trophy, is a prestigious one-day international (ODI) cricket tournament organized by the International Cricket Council (ICC). It was first held in 1998 and has been a significant event on the cricketing calendar since then.

Early Years and Evolution:

  • 1998: The inaugural tournament was held in Bangladesh and featured six teams. India emerged as the champions, defeating Australia in the final.

  • 2000: The tournament was held in Kenya, and Australia claimed their first title, defeating India in the final.

  • 2002: India regained the title in Sri Lanka, defeating England in the final.

  • 2004: Australia won their second title in England, defeating India again.

Format Changes and Recent Editions:

  • 2006: The tournament format changed to a round-robin group stage followed by semi-finals and a final. Australia won their third title, defeating West Indies.

  • 2009: The tournament was held in South Africa, and Australia extended their dominance, winning their fourth title by defeating England.

  • 2013: England won their first title in England, defeating India in the final.

2017: Pakistan won their first title in England, defeating India in the final.
